Brand new Butterboards are here! Butterboards is our own take on a simple, yet powerful collaborative whiteboard that is seamlessly integrated into your Butter experience!
Here are the most important updates:
✨ Redesigned UI
Butterboards have received a complete design overhaul. The new interface is sleek and modern, yet it retains the familiar and friendly Butter aesthetic. This fresh look ensures that your collaborative sessions are as visually pleasing as they are productive.
⏩ Follow-me Functionality
Keeping everyone on the same page has never been easier. Use the Follow-me feature, to effortlessly guide participants through your thoughts and ideas. Simply activate Follow-me, and everyone will be brought to your current view, ensuring no one misses a beat.
🎛️ Control editing permissions
Boards are great and also work well to present work and ideas! If you're just looking to present, you can disable editing for all participants, so they'll be in view-only mode! You can now present your board with ease!
🙈 Hide cursor names and anonymous editing
Sometimes, simplicity is key. For those moments when you need a cleaner workspace, you can now hide cursor names. This feature reduces clutter, allowing you to focus on what’s important without the distraction of multiple names on the screen. You can also enable anonymous editing to remove names for all pariticipants completely.
🖇️ Add images and embed interactive elements
Add some personality to your Butterboards by uploading images or embedding interactive elements like videos from Youtube or code snippets from Codepen. This new feature allows you to bring your ideas to life by incorporating visuals and interactive content, making your sessions more engaging and dynamic.
🚀 Quick launch boards from your toolbox
Time is of the essence, and the new Board quick launch option lets you create and launch a new board in seconds directly from your toolbox. Use the quick launch to quickly open a new space to let your thoughts flow freely!

When creating a new board, you'll have the option to add one of our ready-made templates from the Butter Template Gallery to the board! We've got everything from buttery retro and adventurous sprint planning templates to brainwriting guides and business ideation canvases!

Another great thing is that you can add multiple templates to your board at any time! Access all available templates, both workspace and public, from the template picker in the top right of your board! It's just as smooth as you'd like it to be!
🤩 Create your own templates
You can of course also create your own templates! Simply save the board your working on as a template and you can use it as a starting point for your next sessions! Templates can be private or you can share them with all members of your workspace.

We've had a lot of requests for improvements on the Butter recordings! Here are a few major updates that we've just shipped to improve them significantly!
🙈 Hide participants from recordings
Sometimes, it's just not practical to have your participants show up on your recordings. You can now set it up so participant videos are hidden in the final recording! you can set this up in your room or in your session. Chris also has a short explainer that you can check here:
🤩 Improved viewer experience for recordings
Together with the updates to hide participants, we've cleaned up the recording outputs so that it looks much crisper and cleaner.
What does this mean? It means we've removed any unnecessary elements from the final recording, to make sure that your viewers will have the most focused and optimised experience possible!

We've made tracking poll results simpler by posting them directly in the chat. This update enhances visibility and keeps everyone informed throughout the session.
🤩 Bring Up Results for Everyone!
Revisiting earlier poll results during a session is now possible. Facilitators can easily reopen previous poll results right from the chat, making it easier to recall and discuss responses.

The new Quick Yes/No poll type is designed for swift feedback and can be set up in advance of your session. More on this below!

You can now see the tools that people are using while in the observe mode! You can even chat directly with the group from the observe mode if needed!
We've cut the clutter for a smoother participant experience, focusing on what matters: collaboration and simplicity. Plus, transitions are smoother than ever.
Ever needed to go back and see which people were in what group? Or maybe you've wanted an easy way to quickly spotlight a group to present their work? With the new breakout history, it's not just possible—it's easy.

On Monday, January 22nd, we'll be rolling out a new session layout to Butter (aka Project Snug Butter). It's a big update and a massive improvement, so we wanted to give you a chance to familiarize yourself with it already now.
The new version of Butter is the most expansive yet, and has been designed to maximise space for collaboration.
We've cut down on 'dead space' and fine-tuned the design, giving you 15% more space to get creative. Enjoy tools like Miro, MURAL, screen shares, and more in an edge-to-edge format, offering your participants a truly immersive experience.
The days of looking left and right to find stuff you need are over. True story!
The updated layout brings a fully-stocked sidebar and beautiful new top bar, containing everything you need. Yup, this means that your toolbox and templates are no longer floating around on their own, but have joined the company on the left! This both gives you more space, and makes it much easier to find exactly what you need.
The overall experience is close to what you're used to, and it should be very easy to roll right into it. There are however, a few noticeable changes, that we want to make sure you're aware of!
📹 Recording button: The recording button has been moved to the top right. We've given it some nice color so that it is easy to find 🥰
🛠️ Toolbox: Your toolbox has been moved to the left sidebar and opens from the left. Full height of the screen!
💬 Chat and Notes: Chat and Notes now open from the left, instead of from the right side of the screen.
⚙️ Settings in session: The Settings menu has also moved to the left sidebar. You'll find it at the bottom.

In case you're curious, and don't want to go exploring on your own (you should, you reaaally should), here are the most noticeable things that have also been updated:
📋 Agenda: The agenda and agenda dropdown have been tweaked. Snug is the word and buttons have moved a bit to make it more intuitive. Paused agendas now also look dashing!
🎥 Updated video menu: You can now enable and disable your background effects directly from the video menu. Neat!
🎵 Music player: A more streamlined version of the music player. With all the great vibes you know and love, just in smarter packaging!
🎛️ Tool controls: All tool controls have been improved! You'll still find them in the top bar, just better looking.
📝 Chat & notes: Both have been tweaked to fit seamlessly into the layout - and, as mentioned above, now open from the left, instead of the right! Jakob Nielsen would be proud 🥲
🤩 Reactions and sounds: Refreshed reaction and sound effect menus! And a new reaction icon in the sidebar to go with the makeover!
😎 Video grid: A little less rounded corners - but only a little bit. Video tiles also sit a bit more snug!
Oh yes! We've still got a few more things in the works for you!

Butter recaps are now fully responsive which means you can now access them from any mobile or tablet! Why is this important? Let's everyone access recaps shared with them, from anywhere ✅
You can now set the default sharing settings for your recaps in your room! Simply navigate to your room setup and change the recap access permissions! No more need to change sharing settings after every session 🙌
We recently reverted back from our 4:3 format to the standard 16:9 format to better accommodate everyone using virtual cameras to enhance their virtual experiences. Now, we're excited to introduce another big improvement for you - The Presenter mode for virtual cameras!
Enable the new presenter mode, select your input source and you will now be blown up in HD to easily leverage all of the amazing effects and tricks that you've built up!

Two improvements that makes working in Butter even smoother!
⚡️ Resize the app window: You can now resize most apps within Butter.Want to see more of the app? No problem! Want to see more participants? Done! Simply drag the handle to adjust the size to your preference.
🧠 Focus mode: It can work wonders to remove distractions. Enter Focus mode!
When Focus mode is activated, everything other than you, your participants, and your tool will be hidden. No reaction buttons, no agenda. Just the work to be done.
Annotations have finally made it to Butter! You can now draw on your screen while screensharing or presenting a PDF.
Here's some stuff to know about annotations:
✏️Magic erase: The annotations work like a pointer that disappears after five seconds after you stop drawing.
🤝Choose who can annotate: Only facilitators can annotate by default, but you can toggle on access for everybody to draw together!
🎨Choose your style: Change the stroke thickness and color to your liking.A highly requested feature that we hope you'll love!
Screensharing has been completely rebuilt from the ground up.
It's much smoother and makes it easier to:
✨Move the dock: The screensharing dock is now moveable, so it'll never block your content.
😍See more faces: Resize the video gallery to see up to 20 people at a time while you screenshare.
🍾Pop out the agenda: See and control the full agenda from its own window while you're screensharing. You can pop out the Chat and Notes too!

Updates include:🛠 Assign tools (e.g. Miro boards or Google Docs) to breakouts and they will open automatically
✅ Add tasks for breakout groups to complete during the session
✋ Allow participants to easily request help when they need it during sessions

What's cooking good looking? We've pushed a lot of updates out on Butter today!
⚡️ Performance updatesWe've pushed out new video grid layouts! The new layouts have a significant impact on performance (and network usage) and should make for a lot more smoother sessions! The new layouts use a locked aspect ratio to better utilise the capture from traditional webcams without needing to crop anything away.
⏱ Redesigned timersThe Butter Timers have been updated! Changes include: completely new design, ability to minimise timer, colour customisation, add minutes while timers are running as well as adjusting volume locally.
Finally, you can now decide whether you want to have the "I'm done" indicator there or not. Schmooooth!

The recent update to Chrome 92 caused a number of bugs in Butter. Most critical you may have witnessed that the videos would black out during your sessions.This was a bit of hairy one that Google decided to throw at us, however, we're happy to announce that we've finally fixed it 🙌Have a great day!
